Hi there!! When I started this blog I was unsure of what I wanted to do with it... Now I know I have started a new blog called Applepie and Icecream quilts. I can't think of anything cozier than homemade applie pie and icecream so that's why I have called it that- I hope you'll join me!!

Latest finishes

Well I've finished two quilts so far this year so I'm powering along with my resolution!!! Last week we visited my parents for a week so these were finished before then but this is the first chance I've had to blog about them. The first is a quilt top that I've had done for over a year... woops!! I love this quilt- it's a log cabin made from "Blessings" by Brannock and Patek honey buns. It was inspired by a giveaway that Nicole had.

The second is a quilt that I've had cut out for a long while- so I pieced it and quilted it in less than a week! This is the largest quilt I've quilted and it was hard! I broke two needles and used 5 bobbins for this quilt. I love the results though!!! The fabric is Faye Burgos and it was a kit from the fat quarter shop from a couple of years ago. There was enough fabric for two table runners with some left over too... I'll post the table runners when they're washed and crinkly- I made them with mum on my holiday!

The backing is a cheater fabric and worthy in it's own right!

I went to Cobar with mum and had a wonderful time in the Cobar Quilt Shop. I bought a Nancy Halverson christmas wall hanging kit and some "Saltbox Harvest" by Deb Strain to make a quilt. I have some very exciting autumn quilts to start now!!!!

I love to decorate for the season. Summer, autumn, winter, spring and christmas. My favourite season is autumn and I barely have any quilts for this??? So this year I plan to make some- I have one month (uni goes back in Feb) to make a small quilt and some lap quilts for colour- then I have both ottomans and the back of the couch covered. I also drool when it is autumn in America and everyone has decorated so I'm going to get my pumpkin on and go a little overboard- it's exciting!! Other than that my New Years Resolution is to finish, finish, finish!! I know I say that every year but this year I feel it! I'm about to quilt two largish quilts and a huge quilt for Mick. I also am putting everything in to uni this year so I need to sew when I can. Here is a picture of my birthday present from Mick- 4 Jim Shore angel bells- one for each season. The runner is from leftovers from my American Patriot quilt- yes I finished the top finally!!

Christmas Decorations

One of the things that I really love about christmas is when bloggers show their decorations- I really do love it!! I'm finding this year that my style is changing a little from 1800's reproduction to country primitive. I still love traditional style Moda though!! I'm not going to change much- just add in a little here and there of wool applique. On that note here is the first of my "Wool banner of the month" club finishes.

I love it and it only took two afternoons to do! It's from "Primitive Gatherings" in America. Here are the rest of my decorations this year...

This lovely angel is my christmas present from Mick. She is my fisrt Jim Shore christmas decoration- I have normal ones- and he is going to get me one every year for my present!!! He doesn't understand the attraction!! The white table with the mirror is my present from my in laws- I'm going to strip it and stain it- it's so lovely!

Hi There! In the week between my exams ending and starting my clinical placement I finished 3... count them- 3!!!... quilts- 2 schnibbles and a lap quilt! I was very impressed. At the moment I am buggered- clinical is taking it out of me so there's not much sewing going on! Here are a few snaps from my iPhone.

Back again! I went to "Quilts in the barn" this year and it was wonderful! Jo Morton was the special guest and the display of her quilts and quilts made from her materials were so inspiring. The guest store was "The Quilted Crow" and so of course I had to buy something!!! Here is my newest table runner- cotton with wool applique. I'm still sewing down the wool- hence it's infinished state.

This project is the Vignette "In stitches" quilt. I stuffed up the tracing so I thought I would make a pillow out of it or something... I'm going to put it off to the side and get on with the real block so I can feel like I'm making some progress.

I'm glad I did these updates- boy I start a lot of projects!!! I have a few more but they are quilt tops and I think I'll wait until they're quilted. Wendy asked about my applique method- Floriani produce a product called stitch and wash. It was designed to be a stabliser for stitcheries but if you cut it out in the shape of your applique then iron it onto the back of your fabric- you can cut the material out, leaving a 1/4-1/8 inch seam allowance, and then glue the edges down and blind stitch it to your background. I call it cheating because it looks like needleturn applique but there is no tricky turning to do!!

Well here is the start of my SKOW SAL. I "cheat" with applique- I use the Floriani stitch and wash method- so here is the block before I have sewn it down...

And here are some lovely christmas stitcheries- firstly from Rosalie Quinlan's bool "Bon Noel"...

This gets made into a little stuffed heart and it goes on the tree- there are three of them! And lastly, I started this project last night and I want it for this christmas so I'll be stitching like mad!! It's another Rosalie Quinlan pattern...

Hello hello hello!!!

Well it's not all been about school work this semester so I will be doing a couple of updates to my comings and goings! First we have a new hobby.

Did you guess soap making?? The ones on top are chocolate and orange essential oil swirled + jaffa! And the ones on the bottom are different shapes from the first batch that I made, plain. It is pure hell waiting for 4-6 weeks to use my own soap!! I'm hoping to make some goats milk with honey and oats today or tomorrow!!

The next update is a stitch along that I'm following along with- I know, I know. I join them all the time- blah blah blah!! They'll get done!! This one has a blog aswell but I am not a poster :( The project is the quilt out of Anni Downs' new book called "Some Kind of Wonderful" (SKOW) called "My Favourite Things". I've dug into the stash and come up with some lovely CW fabrics and I'm ready to start!!

I've stuffed up already!!! I don't like destroying books or magazines so I scanned the stitchery patterns and printed them out so I could pop them onto my light box and see through properly. I thought they looked a little small and I even checked out the blog to see what everyone elses looked like and, still, I persevered. I just figured I would adlib some flowers and be clueless as to why mine was different! I even remeasured and rechecked my cutting. This morning it hit me that I had printed it a different size so I checked... sure enough it had printed at 93%! I'm such a nit wit! I have dithered about with whether or not to unpick it or not and have decided that I have to. So much work down the drain! So here is my progress so far...

... to only get rid of it!

If anyone was worried that this quilt wasn't for them because of the bright colours, don't be! It is looking delicious in darker traditional/ country colours!!! I'm working on the shoo-fly block and should have an update on them soon!

Quilt/Stitch-a-longs!

I have joined two quilt-a-longs! The first is...

...the Vignette In Stitches quilt. Vignette is a new magazine from Leanne Beasley and the mystery quilt is gorgeous so I'm stitching in in "Perennials" from Kansas Troubles Quilters- just about to make my first cut!

The other is...

...Simple Things Quilt Along. Only this part of the fabric has arrived but it's "Grace" by 3 Sisters, beautiful christmas coloured fabrics!!! Click on the links to the side if you want to know more! I'm also doing a matching schnibble in the Grace fabric and a little needle holder etc from the Perennials fabric, just deciding which one. I've been on uni holidays for over a week now and this is all I've managed on the sewing front (ie. dreaming)! Work, work, work...

I can't wait until September! This will be my first barn trip and the signature quilt (and of course the others) will be fantastic! I love Jo Morton designs and she will be there. Nearly Ready!

I'm nearly ready to get back into sewing madly! Classes have finished for the semester and I'm studying madly for the exams. I thought I'd take a little time out to aknowledge that I have been a bad blogger and quilter! It's all been for this...

...my Bachelor of Nursing. I'm loving it! I've made some wonderful friends and woken up my brain and life is good! I can't wait to sew some little projects, catch up on some BOM's, quilt some tops and generally fondle some fabrics! Mum and Dad came down in April and Mum and I went to went to the quilt convention in Melbourne and I finally convinced her to join me in a long paused project called Crazy Christmas by Lynette Anderson!!! Here is a reminder of Lynette's range called Christmas Magic that we are using.

Oh the plans!!! I bought a kit for a matching cushion and we discovered that The Patchwork Teahouse still had some of this range left so mum decided what the hell!! I can do stitcheries whilst watching tv so they really don't interfer with study. That's my justification anyway!
I'm also making a small signature block for Quilts in the Barn. Linda is making a quilt to raffle off at her exhibition in September. It's for breast cancer and she needs another 40 blocks to be sent by the 24th May! The instructions are on her blog and they have to be made in Jo Morton fabrics because it is a Jo Morton exhibition this year! Jo herself will be there!!!! I can't wait! I'll post a pic when I finish!

The quilt that I finished other day is my brown paper bag challenge from the Patchwork Apple. I did the center block and then it worked like a round robin. I love the finished result and it goes nicely on the larger ottoman. Since I have decided to "decorate" with my quilts I'm not so fussed with how they will work as lap quilts or larger so I have given myself the freedom of just making what my heart desires! Here it is in full.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day. I have to work but Mick has rostered me off just in time for the fireworks!!! I love fireworks- in fact I celebrate my birthday with fireworks every year!!! That probably has more to do with the fact that my birthday is New Years Eve though! Here is a sneak peek at my latest.

It is the brown paper bag challenge finished. I just quilted it and now it needs binding and washing! This brings my red, white and blue collection up to 5 so my house is nicely "decorated" for summer!

All up I raised $400 with the help of you girls- thank you so much!!! I would also like to thank Catherine and the Homespun magazine people for generously donating the magazines to my auction to make it extra special!!! I will miss these two kits but they are going to great homes for a deserving cause and I am so appreciative to Toni for organising this oppurtunity. My thoughts go out to all of the flood victims in QLD and in the other affected areas.

There is a little addendum on Toni's blog about the finishing time and a few points about payment (taken from Toni's blog):

A small change and information about payment of auctions or raffles...

We have suggested to auction holders that they modify the finish time of their auction to Monday at 9pm. We're sure there are many people who have their eye on an auction or two who might be keen to make a last minute bid and not everyone wants to stay up until midnight! Please check individual auctions to confirm finish time.

A note about PAYMENT...if you are the winner of an auction or raffle, please make sure that all payments are made into the Premier's Disaster Relief Fund. In order to have your winning goods posted to you, you will need to show proof of payment to the owner of the auction/raffle.

If you make your payment by Credit Card you will have an email sent to you. This email should then be forwarded to the owner of the auction/raffle so that they can verify receipt number (for raffle winners) and/or payment amount (for auction winners).

If your payment is made by internet bank deposit transfer, you can save a pdf file at the time of making the transfer.

In the worst case scenario (i.e. receipt email has been deleted or pdf of bank deposit has not been made) you can take a snapshot of your bank statement on their computer screen and crop the appropriate area so that it displays only the donation information. That way, you are still sending proof of payment, but not viewing sharing your whole bank statement.

So tomorrow at 9pm the auctions will finish- wow! I'd like to thank everybody who bid on both of my items. Flood Relief Auction

The second kit that I am auctioning is the 2009 Quilt aid kit. This kit has the finishing kit from the Patchwork Apple, threads and backing. Another gorgeous quilt in pretty pinks and blues from numerous Aussie designers including Rosalie Quinlan, Natalie Lymer, Natalie Bird, Sue Daley, Lynette Anderson, Anni Downs, Helen Stubbings, Majella Rush, Janelle Wind, Kerry Gilleapie, Liz Stanway and Natalie Ross. I have included pictures of some blocks so you'll get the idea.
These quilts started their lives as charity quilts and I hope that they'll continue to do well for charity!!! Flood Relief Auction

We all know what has been happening in QLD in the last week. Toni from Make it Perfect has come up with a fabulous idea to raise money for aid. I am auctioning off two kits from my stash- one on this post and one on another post so I can keep track of the auctions. They are over $1000 together and I hope to raise a fair bit from them so get your skates on girls!
The rules are simple:

Work has been hectic so I haven't done much sewing but here is a project that I've just cut out. Yes it's American Patriot fabric but I hope to have it made by Australia day on the 26th. We don't do red, white and blue half as good as the Americans so it's lucky our flag is the same colours so we can jump on the fabulous bandwagon!!!

The next picture is of the fabric that is left from this kit! I love the fat Quarter Shop!!! Hello matching table runner. I think red, white, and blue just lends itself to summer, don't you?

Then here is a peek at my large Madiera project- slowly, slowly!! I just don't want to be finished with this range so I'm dragging my feet- that or it's just taking too long!

I'm not making resolutions this year (skimming past the fact that I failed last years miserably!) because I'm heading back to uni to do nursing again. I'll finish it this time! The last time was 14 years ago and I did 2 years and dropped out- I was a stupid kid. That translates to not much sewing but I'll hopefully fit some in- I'm going gangbusters until I start though so if work doesn't get too much worse I'll be back soon!

Prairie Womens Sewing Circle

You know the beautiful non-christmassy projects I was talking about in my last post? Well here is the first one that I've finished!

This is the fifth in a series called The Prairie Womens Sewing Circle by Pam Buda of Heartspun Quilts. There are 6 in journey one! I started with this one because the fabric called to me. Every single fabric in the kit was stunning!!! I especially liked the backing!

Luckily it's a kit from the Fat Quarter Shop so there is plenty left over that is now in my stash. I joined the circle because if the log cabin in month 2 so I'm not sure why I started to make them this month, but now I've started I'm not stopping! December's is a lap quilt but the others are smallish and there is a table runner. I love this club and Pam is designing madly to bring out journey two. In the meantime I have to decide which one to do next!

I highly recommend jumping on this one if you haven't already! It's fun, affordable and the quilts are gorgeous!

Christmas Wreath

This is my christmas project for the year! I have so many to do that sometimes it overwhelmes me. So if I feel relief at the thought of only doing one, then I know I am doing the right thing! Maybe I'll be productive in July! I have some beautiful non-christmassy things to make and I'd prefer to be doing them. This is a Moda Bakeshop pattern and I've made it with Makin New Friends by Deb Strain- she has wonderful seasonal fabric. I love her autumn stuff!

Well I have a couple of quilt along pictures to share so lets get started!

This is the first block for the jelly roll quilt along (JRSQA) from moosequilts. I knew if I procrastinated enough I would change my mind on the fabric so this is Kansas Winter by (you guessed it) Kansas Trouble Quilters! I don't have any yardage of this range but I have the jelly roll- a turnover and other KTQ yardage so we'll make do! I love it and am very happy about missing the quilt along bit to get a wonderful quilt.

This beauty is the quilt along that is happening now- Layer Cake Sampler Quilt Along (LCSQA) and it's in my absolute favourite- Blessings by Brannock and Patek. I've just finished the top that I made out of 3 honeybuns and I will show you when I have a picture- it may or may not be quilted! I've also finished a top for Mick- these two quilts are the biggest I've made and I have to psych myself up to quilt them! I have also started on my last Madiera project- shedding a tear. This is another big quilt that will look wonderful with my two schnibbles in that fabric. It's no use keeping it in the cupboard and patting it every now and then- I need to get it made into a quilt- so I can pat it every now and then!!!

Day 1 was fun! Gudrun designed a little quilt-as-you-go table runner with applique candy corns. I changed up the colours and ditched the applique and I have a spring table runner! Thanks Gudrun for a fantastic idea!!

A bit of Autumn fun in September!

Hi all- it's been a while! I didn't sew a stitch for three months but I'm back with a finish! Back in SA I was in a group called the Civil War Girls and I had a ball with those ladies and I miss them terribly. We were making a Sylvia's Bridal Sampler from the book of the same name. It's from the Elm Creek series and it's 140 6 1/2 inch sampler blocks. I never did my homework and there was too much chatter (not complaining) in class to get more than two blocks done so I only ended up with 22 finished blocks! I never thought I'd do anything with them until the other day when I was gathering reproduction fabrics for an applique project and I needed more blue. I thought I should make sure that I had enough for this quilt before I stole it, so I designed a finish and set about making it. I got so excited that the quilt top was finished in a couple of days and I quilted and bound it yesterday and today. I love it and because of it's story it is extra special to me!!! I'm still working on a label- I'm not good with them and it needs to be perfect! So here it is- well a picture at least- it's only just out of the dryer and Mick is on the couch under it already!

I always waste so much time after a schnibble is due mourning that schnibble. Yesterday I broke that tradition and finished the borders straight away and then started a new project today! Yes I have started my hexagon quilt along with Julie! Mine is Wrapped in Paisley by Kansas Troubles Quilters and I LOVE it! I think I'll make sure that there is a star in the middle and then just randomly place my hexagons- if that sounds familiar then you are correct! It will look like a large version of my paper pieced hexagon quilt done in scrappy reproductions. You can't have too much of a good thing!

I have repurposed another jelly roll/yardage from Sandy Gervais to do the moose on the porch jelly roll sampler quilt aswell- I'm just waiting for some background to arrive to begin. Along with it, the fabric for my next schnibble will arrive. Around this time of year I find myself wishing I lived in America so I can join in all of the red, white and blue fun! So this year my June schnibble will be an all American extravaganza in homage to the country that inspires and enables alot of my quilt dreams! The schnibble is State Fair and I'm making it out of Bar Harbour from Minnick and Simpson with an American Flag print for the backing. Don't get me wrong I love Australia and I am proud to be an Australian but it's red, white and blue! How can anyone pass that up??? It makes me feel like apple pie and ice cream- mmmmm! Ooh- thats what I can call it! My apple pie and ice cream schnibble! Bring it on!

Don't you hate it when work gets in the way of quilting? I know I do! Here is a borderless flimsy that I did over 3 hours of frantic free time today. Because I had left it so late to do my schnibble this month I chose one without triangles! This is Houseboat with Looking Back as the fabric- it seems I am on the Brannock and Patek train at the moment and I'm loving it!!! This was (and still is I think) a kit from the fat quarter shop.

It's been a while so here's a catchup! Mum and Dad came down at the begining of May and we went to the AQC in Melbourne- Mum and I that is, Dad went to the museum and rode on the trams! We caught up with some friends, met some that I've only met on the phone and had a thoroughly enjoyable day! I definitely want a long arm one day- I had a try of one and LOVED it! While I was talking to Jane she asked what I was up to. Well I've thought about it some more and here is what I'm up to- quite different to what I've been up to!
Sue Daley has some tutorials on paper pieced hexagons that go into making a quilt based on Frederica Josephson's quilt from Annette Gero's book- sometimes known as candied hexagons.

My first one is on sitting on the book. I'll keep you posted with these- they are reproduction fabrics and there'll be about 400 of them!
The FQS recently had a sale on Blessings and I couldn't help myself! I have 4 honeybuns that will go into a log cabin from this book by Judy Martin- I just haven't decided which one yet! Probably a simple one so I can have it soon!

Then there is this...

A sampler on 28 ct Linen from my local Needlework shop Sovereign Needlework. When I got Thelma's cross stitch I was a bit overwhelmed and decided to do a "little and easy" sampler to get back in the swing of things- I overdid the "little and easy"- just a tiny bit! I'll keep you posted! On the Schnibble front, I still haven't decided. I got my book yesterday and I love it! I don't have any layer cakes though and I'm on a strict fabric diet- except of course for my little blowout yesterday! I do, however, have at least 5 non year of schnibbles kitted up, ready to go. I will have to decide soon! Maybe after playing with blessings for a while I'll do one of those two!
I've been working on my brown paper bag round robin- I had to reproduce the center and first round because I was a horrible person and lost it in the move. In a desperate bid to find it Jane let me have it another month so I have added the triangle round and the applique round to it. It has taken longer to do than I anticipated but it looks fabulous! There was applique on the second round so I just added the year and have included an alphabet and matching fabric for the dear lady who it belongs to, to put her initials on it too. I took away what was personal in losing the middle so I hope this goes a little way towards making it her quilt again. Of course I can't show it to you- sufice to say it is a stunning quilt so far!

I've been waiting to show you my Tagalong for a couple of days now because I wanted to wash it first but I have no idea where my colour catchers are so here it is "uncosied"!

It's made with Wiscasset and I am in love! So much that it has inspired me to get out a project that I started last year. It's A Miss Rosie pattern called "Sweet Escape" and I'm making it out of Wiscasset and Looking Back. It's underneath Tagalong! Ta da!

So thats what I'm working on at the moment. I still have a fat quarter bundle of it and another charm pack! The fat quarter bundle is going to be another Miss Rosie pattern- "Raise the Roof". As for the lone charm pack- I may have to buy another and make a schnibble! Or I could do a table runner! Or Sweet Liberty Truffles! The choices are limitless!

Here is the prize I won from the last parade. Thank you Corrie from Quilt Taffy! I'm in love with this christmas range! I'll definitely be saving a schnibble for it! When the yardage comes out I will be in touch! Thats the good thing about schnibbles- you can go crazy with the binding and backing all in the same range because they are small! Last but not least- you know my thing with yo-yo's? Well I just extended my horizons to yo yo flowers!

A few things worth talking about!

I got a present today! Thelma's cross stitch arrived! Thanks Thelma- I'm quite chuffed!

It was a good day to arrive because it's my wedding anniversary today! 9 years ago we had the best wedding I've ever been to! I'm not biased or anything! We had it on my parents property- 50000 acres in the middle of nowhere- we had to put signs on the gateposts of the 8 km long driveway so people wouldn't think they had turned down the wrong road. Mum's garden was a little oasis of beauty in the red dirt of the outback. It was a wonderful day. Very different, more like a big country party than a stuffy wedding, so you can see why it's still the best wedding I've ever been to!
Here is the progress of my April Schnibble, Tag-a-long, made with Wiscasset.

I think this is my favourite so far! I love 9 patches! Carrie's patterns are so beautifully written- they are so easy to follow- I love them! It will have a light border and then a pieced border and then I can quilt it! Because they are so intricate I think I'll be stippling all of my schnibbles- they are little slices of cosiness!!! Just a quickie! Jolly Jabber (my favourite store- The Fat Quarter Shop) blogged today about a competition they are sponsoring- It is over on Jaybird Quilt's blog (Julie)! I'm glad I went over there because I used to read her blog and don't know why I stopped! I'm all caught up now and am thinking of joining the hexagon quilt along! Go and visit- the prize is a Sandy Gervais kit and is gorgeous!!!
Edit: I have joined the quilt-a-long!!!! I've ordered my Wrapped in Paisley and am excited!!! The button is on the right- this looks like a very fun project- now to join the flickr group!

A 2 year old WISP!

I finished another project! Okay, okay- I sewed the binding down on an old table runner! I don't know why it took me so long to do this final little bit but it did. Voila!

It was my first official patchwork. I'd done a class for a quilt as you go which was a sort of stack and whack (is that what you call them???), but this was the first one with blocks. It's even backed with calico- aggghhhh! I really like it still though. Earlier this year I commented on how slack I was last year with my finishes and I forgot to take into account two actual quilts that I had done so it was better than I thought! One was a patchwork with chenille and the other was a patchwork flannel one. The flannel one was quilted (straight lines) and the other was pillowed and tied- it's easy to hide the ties in chenille backing!

Both were kits from the patchwork apple- Jane does lovely kits! I've actually made two of the flannel one- the other I gave to a friend for her birthday! See because I have written that down now- I shouldn't forget it again! Well I'm off to eat some chocolate!!! Happy Easter everybody!

I love the "1st" of the month! It's the 2nd for me because I live down under. It's schnibbles day! Go to Sinta and Sherri's blogs to see why! Everybodies roundabout looks fabulous! Last night was Mick's mum's birthday and I cooked a Martha Stewart cake- I have loved Martha for a long time but some of her recipes scare me! This one was out of her Baking book and is soooooo worth it!

It's a banana cake with caramelised banana in the middle, marscapone icing and caramel dribbled on top (make Homer drooling noises here)!I made caramel- I cannot believe it! The first batch burned but the second was magnificent!!!

We had a BBQ and it was a lovely night.

March Schnibble

Well here is Roundabout- a flimsy without it's borders! It's one in the morning and I wont be finishing tonight! See that pile to the right? It's the blocks that I still have to do- you see I stupidly said to myself- "Sash, it's a schnibble- two days tops!" I forgot to factor in that the layer cake version should take more time! I moved- is that an excuse??? It will be finished soon and I'll have a large schnibble to curl up with! I love it already!
Something cool happened tonight- one of my blog "idols" had a giveaway and I am eagerly awaiting a cross stitch kit from her!!! Thelma you are wonderful! Visit Thelma- she has a beautiful blog and her work is exquisite!

What a month!

Well we've moved- to a place where winter is freezing and I'm looking forward to it!!! Bring on the quilting weather! Because of the move I've done no sewing and I've felt a bit lost. I even lost the ability to read blogs everyday there for a bit but I've caught up now! Here is the latest schnibble- Roundabout. As of now I am up to this stage- I just love how this will become a quilt- it still amazes me.It's a layer cake instead of two charm packs so it will be a lap quilt. It's made with Astor Manor- beautiful fabric! This next picture is a project I finished a while back. It's the lessons that came with my Bernina. It has quilting, decorative stitches, buttonholes and bobbin work. It's on my kitchen bench at the moment.
This is what is on it! My sister made it- isn't it beautiful! She's the artistic one!
Well- today was a quick one and I'll be back with my Roundabout progress- running on a deadline is a saving grace sometimes! Even my husband know's that this HAS to be done!

Oh- I forgot to mention my Sunday Best- I had it sitting on my couch and I did fall in love with it, which makes me glad that it went to a very good home. A friend of mine loved it! I was going to make her a schnibble anyway and she commented on how much she liked this one and was over the moon when I said "It's yours"! Warm and fuzzy I tells ya!!!

February Schnibble

Look what I finished ealier in the week! Yes it is the February Schnibble- Sunday Best! This one is legitimate- Sherri and Sinta have let me join A Year of Schnibbles!!!! I was so excited when they replied, I finished this in two days. This quilt I love. I love the pattern. I love the material. I love the quilting. Yet, the whole thing leaves me a little blah. I don't know what it is- singularly I love everything about this quilt but I don't get that feeling of joy when I look at it. Mick thinks it's because it's too light- it doesn't match our house at all so I'm making a darker Sunday Best with Deb Strain's Pumpkin and Spice. I know this is a picture of a jelly roll but that's so you can see the colours. This one will be made from a layer cake and will be larger than the Millhouse Inn one.
An autumn quilt!! This pattern went together so easily- it was wonderful- thanks Carrie!
On another note- I'm moving. I've been saying goodbye to all of my quilting friends over the last week or so and it is so sad. I'll miss you all so very much but I'm coming back to visit and I'll be here in blogland! Thank you for all of the wonderful times and your friendship!

Another Schnibble!

Here is Winter White in Madeira! That is my stash busted of this fabric. I'm sending mum the rest to go with her charm pack and I can now look at these every day. I just love them! The quilting went a whole lot better on this one- much neater and the back looks a thousand times better! So that means I have the current schnibble and two more to catch up on and I am up to date with the girls doing "A Year Of Schnibbles". Not that I'm in the parade- I just want to make some of these lovely little quilts and why not start by following that? I love looking at the interpretations of them each month!They are great practice for free hand quilting- which is why I bought my machine. I'll get stippling down pat and then I can start building on that skill- not that I think I'll be good at it! It is hard!
My binding is benefiting from all the practice too. My corners are getting neater and easier.
I think I might start Sunday Best- not what I'm supposed to be doing- but hey- it is a wonderful past time this quilting thing!!!

January Schnibbles

I'm not in the Year of Schnibbles, but I'm following along anyway! This is January's- it's called Madeline and I made it out of Madeira. I discovered Moda with this range and I love it! I collected 5 charm packs of it and I gave one to Mum, made this from two and I'm making the first schnibble from two now. I also have large quilt kit to make from it. I was hoarding it and I don't know why!!! It looks so good on the coffee table! It's also my first attempt at stippling- a few hiccups but I love the way it looks and I think it's the most beautiful thing I've ever made. I'm making a Madeline for a friend of mine in Wiscasset too after she saw this!The entire thing was a stash buster. Charm packs, inner border, binding, backing and batting- I bought the pattern last year when I discovered A Year of Schnibbles and fell in love with them. I already had a thing for mini quilts and now I can make them out of charm packs! I know- you've already heard about my obsession with Miss Rosie!!! I'll shush now!
I just love it so much!
Now I've shown you this I'll go back and continue with the 72 flying geese I have to make for Winter White!

Life is Beautiful

After the mini quilt surge I started "Life is Beautiful" by Helen Stubbings. I love the pattern and I think my fabric choices are gorgeous! I'm using Bonnie Blues America and Bonnie Blues Neutral from the fat quarter shop, I love this range so it's a good thing I also have the web sampler celebration 4 here to do! The stitchery fabric is XLN tea stain dark and the sashing and binding are a Jo Morton fabric that I never particularly liked but really make it "pop". Thanks Jane!Here is a close up. I'm using the "Stitch and Wash" method of applique- which is actually what Helen gives instructions for in the pattern! It's a Floriani product and it has done wonders for my "needleturn" applique. It's a fusible stabilizer which you cut in the shape of your applique, iron it on, cut away the fabric leaving 1/4 inch and then glue stick it and fold it over and blind stitch it on. So easy! Love the quilt as you go construction too. Can I gush any more?? You get the hint! Well off to start no. 2.

I know I'm a week late but I've been busy with work etc! I also wanted some photo's for this blog and I only just finished the binding on the last quilt. I've been reading my usual blogs and some of the girls have listed (and shown) the quilts and finishes that they accomplished in 2009. They have been busy and I loved those posts! The thing is that I realised that my finishes for the year are my tinsel, some chrissy decorations and some bags. How slack am I? I've started so many projects that are in various stages of (un)done, and I've bought even more projects than that!!! What I've got is a disease! Can you have quilting related ADHD?? I need a goal this year so my tentative goal is 1 big quilt and two little quilts FINISHED per month. If you have looked down then you'll know that I haven't stuck to that one!! Maybe if I stick to one big quilt a month at least, try to catch up and keep current on ongoing BOM's, work on a christmas quilt for this year and keep up with The Year of Schnibbles then I'll get a major dint in the "stash". I already have 8 big quilts that just need some finishing touches and quilting so I'm set for most of the year on that front. The BOM's will be the hardest, fortunately they'll be the most fun too!!!

So here is what I've been doing the last few days to redeem myself a little. These are 4 of the Laura's Legacy mini quilts from the Quilted Crow girls. I picked up two on Monday that just needed quilting and binding and quilted them and took them to Funky Seeds to bind them. I got one done and the other was binding that I was unfamiliar with so I procrastinated and made another one from start to finish! So I conquered the binding and then made the one that arrived yesterday!

They go in the order I finished them. My favourite one is.... you know, I can't decide. I love mini quilts!!!! I should make my schnibbles this month too. I'm not part of the parade but that hasn't stopped me! I made a tuffet and I have the materials and patterns for the others with January's coming.

So much to do- so little time! I think my biggest goal and the one I need to keep this year is to set aside at least an hour a day to sew and remind myself that it is my hobby and I love doing it and to not stress about things. After all that! I hope everyone has a fabulous year! I'm off to start Life is Beautiful because the pattern arrived today! Mum got it for my birthday and I love it- BEST PRESENT EVER!!

I hope everyone had a lovely christmas- I know I did! Thanks Mum and Dad for coming to visit! I promised tree pictures and here they are. As usual I thought I would start early and get lots of things done- I started 2 weeks ago and barely finished the tinsel by christmas eve!! So there are Marg Lowe ornaments for the 12 button pack from Theodora Cleave, sequin ornaments that I made a couple of years ago and my tinsel. I'm happy with it and now that it basically looks good there's no pressure to build on it- a few projects a year should do it! It's all handmade except for the tree and lights of course!
My village, the start of it anyway- I'll have to kick the council's butt and extend it! It lights up.
Tinsel in situ- I ended up with two strands of "Peace on Earth" and one of "Wiscasset".
Some ornaments- I can't take credit for the little trees- I saw the idea at the quilt show- it's one of each size of yo-yo strung together- cute isn't it??

This little brown bag is the start of a wonderful project from the Patchwork Apple girls, Jane and Sara. It's a round robin and it starts with a 15" square. I'm still trying to figure out what to do! I want something to inspire the rest of the quilt with lots of colours to make the other girls job either easier or more fun, a feathered star or a starburst or something. I really want something that will take pride of place- something that will be out of my box and amazing. It will be because I always think other people do better work than me which is why I rarely make things for my mum because she makes amazing quilts and her embroidery skills are a LOT better than mine!This is my latest project. It's A Miss Rosie's Quilt Company pattern called Sweet Escape. I am obsessed with Miss Rosie at the moment! I have about 10 quilt patterns and the same again with schnibble patterns and counting. They are wonderful and can be made with fat quarter bundles from Moda or layer cakes or jelly rolls. I'm finding that I can buy a fat quarter bundle of fabric that I love and have something to make with it straight away. Love it!!!! So far I have 'Millhouse Inn' by Fig Tree, 'Wiscasset' by Minnick and Simpson and a small bundle of 'Sturbridge Village Harvest' by Judie Rothermal which I will add to and make a Rosie quilt! My Bonnie Blue bundle is going to make 'Life is Beautiful' by Helen Stubbings. Have I mentioned that I love Moda?!? I don't know what I would do with out it. Probably go crazy trying to match stuff- does anyone else have a matching problem? I match all sorts of things and usually end up buying sets or groups of things. Books are a big problem and I need to read them in order- surely thats a common thing right????
This is me set up at the dining room table- I don't have a sewing room but I do have a room filled with my sewing if that makes any sense! If I sew in the dining room I feel like I'm joining in or doing something with Mick- even when I'm not! And the table size of course. Handwork I do in a chair bought especially for me with it's own ottoman and all! I love my chair. You saw pictures of what was on my ottoman at the moment last post. Both of the ottomans are covered in small quilts- one is a mini quilt and the other is officially a table runner but they look fantastic where they are and a quilt is easier to wash than an ottoman!
Oh- 'Sweet Escape is made out of a layer cake of 'Looking Back' by Brannock and Pateck and 'Wiscasset' with borders and backing in 'Wiscasset' Mick showed an interest in how "not girly" it is so he gets it for Christmas! It's huge at 95" squared so he will love it! One day I'll finish his flannel quilt- one day! Bye for now!

It's been a while! I'm over the last blog- who cares about others- this is my blog and it's for me! I've been sewing up a storm lately. I started a new BOM. It's a candlewicking one fromMargaret's Fabrics. I love it- it's so relaxing. I'm not too happy with the second block but I've figured out how to fix the crookedness and the next block was a huge improvement.It goes 3,2,1. I'll post more tomorrow on my latest quilt!

Okay. I've never entered a competition before but I had to enter this one! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Helen Stubbings new BOM Life is Beautiful. I've been waiting for the pattern to come out ever since I caught wind of it on her blog. We have to write a quote and I'm going to be terribly unoriginal and re quote Helen. It's a Nice People Nice Things quote and it is a wonderful rule to live by and particularly personal to me- "Never let your memories be greater than your dreams". I'm trying Helen! Here is Life is Beautiful.

I've even picked out my fabric- Bonnie Blues America and Neutrals but I haven't decided on redwork or blue work yet. Either way I'm getting this pattern- did I mention I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!! Thanks Helen!

It's only been here 12 hours and I've already made it a present and read a heap of samples and started an actual book. I made it a cover, which is a Moda Bake Shop pattern- go to the side bar.

Woops! Oh well- I got 2 1/2 quilt tops done in 7 days. I shouldn't have bought the new Scarpetta- which is very good- I knew I wouldn't be able to not read it. I guess we now know that my first love, reading, is still my main love! Today we bought a new washing machine. It's a front loader and very water efficient, especially when you use it with an enviroball, it's a great product and it works!! So of course we had to go 1/2 hour away to buy it and then I needed to spring clean the laundry! It took all day- but what a nice day! My veges are coming up too so I feel very virtuous on the environmental front at the moment. Off to watch even more bike racing- aggghhhh!

Seven quilt tops in seven days. Thats the goal. I did a disappearing 9 patch on monday and a coin quilt on tuesday. Wednesday I cut out a couple but it was Mick's day off so I spent some time with him. Today at Pink Ladies I did quit alot of a triple irish chain which I will finish tonight. Tomorrow I'll get my nephews quilts made- 2 gorgeous animal quilts, saturday and sunday are two strip quilts, country and red. It is a desperate bid to stop spending!!! I keep buying material and patterns- it's a sickness I tell you. It will also put a little dent in the forever growing pile of quilts that I have to do. Does this mean I have to follow up with a 7 in 7 quilting week?? I can't see that happening! Stay tuned though because I will have another run at things soon with a finishing my quilt tops week. I have a few that need borders or have pieced sashing that I haven't finished. I'll post pictures and an update soon.

Two new quilts

I promised photos and here they are! This is the mystery marathon quilt that we did on Saturday- I got up to this stage and I haven't put the borders on yet- it was a huge 12 hour day but it was great fun!

This is the Rouenneries quilt that I've been blabbing about- the construction of the finished blocks was started last friday and finished (sans borders) last night. There will be a border of the stitchery fabric and then a border of leftover plain strips and binding is the stitchery material again. I think it turned out beautifully! Time to upload the photos onto Flickr so I can show the other ladies my version!

I have no pictures today- DH is asleep on the couch and the lighting is poor! I just finished my "Rouenneries" quilt top- apart from the borders and I have the Mystery Marathon quilt top finished to the borders- so- drumroll please- I finished 2 quilt tops this week! Also I have my last Civil War Legacy class on friday and I hope to have it mostly done- so it may be three! Never would I have hoped to do that! Meanwhile that isn't the exciting news. I picked up my Bernina 440QE today. Oh, I love her! So many projects have been waiting for her (that's my excuse anyways)! I will take photos tomorrow and post again- just had to tell you about "Benni"!

Well the time has arrived and I'm off to the snow!! I have packed the 2nd "It's a Redwork Christmas" and the 6 pies that I have left from the first mailout. I think I've decided to do the pies first and then do the tarts so I can really mix the fabric up. Also the plan for this one has changed from hand work on only the pies and tarts to a fully hand pieced and hand quilted quilt- I may aswell as I'm halfway there! Dear Jane is still in stasis, but I do know who is getting it now- Mum and Dad. Deciding that has given it a new lease so I will start up on it again when I get home. Crazy christmas is progressing nicely and the applique that I had done was the correct method! Phew! Well I'll be back in a week so have a nice one!

"Tinsel"

I was thinking a couple of weeks back about something to go around the christmas tree in place of tinsel. I wanted something "natural" looking like perhaps popcorn string. I also had a range of fabric that wasn't christmasy but that I absolutely loved the colours of. The result was "tinsel"! Named so because it is string like and goes on top of the lights but under the ornaments. Now I'm not crazy and I won't be setting my tree up to show you in situ- you'll have to wait a little for that photo!! I can show you the end product- it's effective and shockingly easy to make!

It's easy to do:

1. Make a yo-yo (suffolk puff). I used the orange clover thingy- thats a good size for them.

2. As you're doing the anchor stitch through your yo-yo, stitch through small or medium ric- rac.

3. Make another yo-yo and attach, evenly spacing them as you go.

4. Make it as long as you like!

How easy is that??? Mine use 2 charm packs, so have 80 yo-yo's and are about 5m long. To make a "noisy" one sew the tiny rusty bells in between your yo-yo's. I have a Wiscasset noisy strand and a peace on earth strand that will be noisy and I'm making another one of each. It's a fantastic way to get the colours of a favourite new Moda release into you house without having to make a quilt. I love it! So at christmas I'll take a photo of my tree and blog it. I have 16 weeks to make a lot of projects (they're all here!) to have a hand made christmas and 20 weeks yesterday, until christmas- wish me luck!

What I'm working on

Wow- how long did it take me to get off my derrière and take some photos so I could have something interesting to say! The push came when my "Tail Feathers" kit came today. I ordered it from Sarah yesterday afternoon and it arrived this morning! Thanks Sarah! I bought the pattern from Jane intending to change the fabrics, I just couldn't resist the originals though and I'm glad I changed my mind! The "rouineires" honey buns that I purchased are making a lovely rail fence lap quilt that I will share with you next time. Here is "Tail Feathers":

It's so beautiful! I'll have to start even though I'm working diligently on this at the moment!

Lynette Anderson's "Crazy Christmas"- it's wonderful too- it needs to be ready for Christmas! So much to do and so little time! I'll add picture updates when I can. I'll also share a lovely christmas decoration that is very easy to make next time!

Qiltaid 2009

Well I have nothing to report on the Dear Jane front but I'm so excited about this next piece of news that I have to share it! I have all my quiltaid blocks ordered!!! Now I can sit back and let them roll in- I can't wait to start. To justify the whopping $600 finished product I've promised my husband that I'll drop everything (except for the odd birthday quilt that I have to finish) and do this quilt in record time. My finishing kit is from Jane- it's beautiful- she also has a backing and batting kit so I have that too. Well I'm off to get ready for the Funky Seeds tonight- it's a great day!!

A8- Hoorah! I managed to get all of the lines running in the same direction without it occuring to me that I should! What a fluke! So here is my second block, I'm very proud of it and now I am definitely underway. I've been sewing my mini quilts (Laura's Legacy mini quilt of the month) from the Quilted Crow so I got my Dear Jane out for Funky Seeds, which is why it's taken so long to do the second block- oh and did I mention that I'm still terrified! Got to get over that. I'll post a picture of the mini quilts when I get them quilted- they are going to be my "practice" for quilting this one. I think that I've started a new obsession with reproduction fabrics as I have three projects on the go with them now. The mini quilts are reproduction and the Pie and Tart BOM that I'm doing from Honeysuckle Cottage is in reproduction fabrics too. Well off to contemplate the next block. Well here we go! This is my first "Dear Jane block" It's A6- I picked an easier one instead of going in order this time because this is the first time I have hand pieced anything!! I must say I'm impressed with the results, although I'm still terrified! I am officially Sasha-Jane 1 0 0 9. I'm using reproduction fabrics and at the moment I hope to have 56 different fabrics so each one will have a triangle, a pieced triangle and about 3 blocks each. The entire quilt will be hand pieced and hand quilted and you think I could've chosen a smaller project to start with but I think it will make my baby Jane something special. I still haven't arrived at a name for it yet but I've got DH on the case! Well I'm off to decide which one to do next- I' think the first row will be out of order until I build a little confidence in what I'm doing and can tackle the harder blocks.
